Richard Hannon praised the decision-making skills of owner Noel O'Callaghan after Nations Alexander went one better than on her previous two starts in the Cambridge Magazine Supporting The AHT Empress Stakes at Newmarket.

Having found only Qipco 1000 Guineas favourite Fair Eva too good on her previous outing, after filling the same spot behind the useful Nasimi on her debut, the daughter of Dark Angel gained a deserved success in the Listed prize.

Despite the deteriorating conditions plenty remained in with chances entering the final quarter-mile of the six-furlong event, in which the early pace had been cut out by Queen Mary Stakes fifth Simmie.

Although Shamsaya and the free-going Hellofahaste moved on approaching the climb to the line, neither could match the finishing kick of the Pat Dobbs-ridden filly (8-1) as she motored on decisively deep inside the final furlong to claim a length and a quarter success.

Hannon said: "She is a lovely filly and has been unlucky to bump into two decent horses. We always thought a bit of her and she loved the ground.

"I worked her Tuesday morning and she didn't work well, I rang the owner and said I am not sure she should run, but he said it's a black type race so let's go for it. Full credit for this goes to him.

"She might come back here for the Duchess of Cambridge Stakes or the Princess Margaret at Ascot.

"It looks like she may get seven and I think she will go on quick ground."
