'Penny drops' for improving Sir Isaac Newton

Sir Isaac Newton could be on his travels after following up his Royal Ascot success by opening his Group-race account in the Finlay Volvo International Stakes at the Curragh.

The four-year-old, trained by Aidan O'Brien, had always promised more than he had shown on the track until winning the Wolferton Handicap at the Royal meeting and he had to display toughness as well as class to see off Chemical Charge.

Sir Isaac Newton (11-8) had finished behind Chemical Charge when third to Portage over this course and distance just three weeks ago but turned the form around with his confidence sky high after his recent victory.

Chemical Charge made a gallant attempt to make all the running in the Group Three contest over a mile and a quarter and proved a nut tough to crack.

Ryan Moore chose the brave route to make his challenge by going to the inside of Ger Lyons' runner on the far rail.

Sir Isaac Newton did not shirk the issue and poked his head though to take the lead in the final half-furlong and win by three-quarters of a length.

O'Brien said: "It's taken a long time for the penny to drop with him. He's starting to mature and relax. He's a horse that could suit America as he likes a nice bit of pace.

"He's always been a very good worker but disappointed us on the track. A mile and a quarter seems to be his trip, and he's relaxing now and quickening."
