Richard Gibson hoping Gold-Fun can shine in Maurice de Gheest

Richard Gibson feels the unique distance of the Prix Maurice de Gheest will suit Gold-Fun down to the ground.

A narrow runner-up to Twilight Son in the Diamond Jubilee Stakes at Royal Ascot, the Hong Kong-based sprinter has stayed on in Europe

Having ruled out a crack at the July Cup, Gibson, who used to train in France, has revealed a trip to Deauville for the six-and-a-half-furlong Group One is next on the agenda.

"This horse always runs well fresh, so we were never going to run in the July Cup, but I know the French programme well and it (Maurice de Gheest) is a very unique distance running 1,300 metres down a straight," Gibson told the South China Morning Post.

"After finishing off so strongly over 1,200m at Royal Ascot, I think that extra 100m will suit him.

"The feeling is that there aren't many options in Hong Kong for him anymore, it's a little sharp for him over 1,200m at Sha Tin, but the variations in Europe are well suited for him."
