William Buick enjoyed his first winner since picking up a 30-day ban at Chantilly when steering Hornsby to victory in the 188Bet Handicap at Doncaster.

Buick, who has lodged an appeal against his suspension following an incident in Sunday's French Oaks, got back in the groove on the Godolphin-owned colt, who was returning after a 358-day absence.

Hornsby (3-1) did his best work in the closing stages as he came with a strong run to lead 50 yards from home and hold Mikmak by a neck.

Trainer Charlie Appleby was delighted the performance and will now look for another handicap over a mile for the son of Dubawi.

"It was his first start of the season and the ground was on the easier side, but William was very pleased with him," said the Newmarket handler.

"He was a bit fresh early on. They've not gone a mad gallop and he's quickened up nicely.

"We'll see how he comes out of it and look for another handicap for him in the summer. I think a mile is his trip. They've gone steady and at this stage of his career I can't see him going beyond a mile.

"It was a pleasing first run, it was only the fourth start of his career. He met with a setback in the spring. It was only minor but we couldn't get him ready for a handicap at Ascot so we've just bided our time with him."

Itlaaq (16-1) came with a sweeping run on the outside to claim the Euro 2016 Betting At 188Bet Handicap.

Mick Easterby's 10-year-old was stopped in his tracks about two furlongs out, but 7lb claimer Danielle Mooney was able to get him out just in time and get up to win going away by a length from Hubertas.

Bahamas (16-1) overcame greenness to win tidily on his debut in the £25 Free Bet At 188Bet Novice Stakes.

Marco Botti's juvenile colt showed a neat turn of foot to hit the front over a furlong out, but Daniel Muscutt had to keep him focused to get home by half a length from Timeless Flight.

Asidious Alexander (9-4 favourite) made a bright start to her career when winning the Best Odds Guaranteed At 188Bet British Stallions EBF Fillies' Novice Stakes in pleasing fashion.

Frankie Dettori sat confidently just behind the pace before asking the Simon Crisford-trained youngster to go about her business, which she did with aplomb to score by a length and a half from Hope Solo.

Sir Michael Stoute's Ruscombe (1-2 favourite) overcame trouble in running to open her account in the Wimbledon Betting At 188Bet Maiden Fillies' Stakes.

Ryan Moore was only able to extricate the half-sister to 2003 St Leger hero Brian Boru inside the final quarter-mile and despite having plenty to do, Ruscombe landed the spoils by a nose from To Eternity.

Ruth Carr's nine-year-old veteran Victoire De Lyphar (6-1) came from last to first to take the 188bet.co.uk Handicap under James Sullivan.

Fran Berry was taken to hospital for assessment after a tumble in that race. Berry was unseated as he pulled up the Alan Bailey-trained Mrs Eve, who suffered a fatal injury entering the straight. He was taken to the medical room at the racecourse before going to hospital for further assessment.

"The horse was put down after being fatally injured. Fran has gone to Doncaster Royal Infirmary for assessment. He was conscious and walking," said clerk of the course Roderick Duncan.

North Yorkshire trainer Jedd O'Keeffe mopped up both divisions of the Free Spins At 188Bet Casino Handicap with L aila Honiwillow (3-1 favourite), ridden by Jack Garritty, and King's Currency (5-1) in the hands of PJ McDonald.
