Postponed made a successful debut for Roger Varian with a most impressive display in the Dubai City of Gold at Meydan.

The five-year-old won the King George VI And Queen Elizabeth Stakes at Ascot and the Prix Foy at Longchamp last season for Luca Cumani, before owner Sheikh Mohammed Obaid Al Maktoum made the surprise decision to move Postponed and the rest of his string across Newmarket to join up with Varian.

Making his first start since September, there were no signs of ring-rustiness as Postponed travelled powerfully in the hands of Andrea Atzeni throughout the mile-and-a-half Group Two.

After moving smoothly into the lead, the son of Dubawi picked up stylishly to seal the deal and only had to be pushed out hands and heels to beat French challenger Dariyan with plenty to spare.

Varian said: "He's a King George winner - a very good horse before he came to me - and he was entitled to do that.

"He's a very well-developed horse and we've had a very smooth preparation for this race.

"He's a big horse - he carries a bit of condition - and I'm sure he'll tighten up a bit further."

Atzeni said: "He was very good. He's been training really well.

"I galloped him here last Wednesday and he felt very good and this was like riding a piece of work.

"Dubawis usually get better with age but we'll have to see in two weeks' time (Sheema Classic) in the big race."
