Charlie Hills eyeing Jersey date with Ibn Malik

Charlie Hills is targeting the Jersey Stakes at Royal Ascot with Ibn Malik.

Although the three-year-old holds an entry in the Commonwealth Cup, the Lambourn handler believes the seven-furlong Group Three prize, in which he finished second in last year with Dutch Connection, is a more realistic aim.

Despite failing to add to his debut win at Newmarket's July Course in three subsequent outings at Group race level as a two-year-old, the gelded son of Raven's Pass made a winning return to action in the Free Handicap at last month's Craven meeting.

Hills said: "Ibn Malik is just steady cantering at the moment. The form of his Goodwood race last year (Vintage Stakes) looks good now with Galileo Gold winning the 2000 Guineas.

"I have put him in the Commonwealth Cup, but I think a more sensible route with him is the Jersey Stakes. I don't imagine he will run before Royal Ascot."

While future engagements have been provisionally pencilled in for Ibn Malik, plans remain up in the air for Mootaharer, the half-brother to multiple Group One-winning sprinter Muhaarar.

Although the son of Dubawi holds an entry in next week's Betfred Dante at York, Hills has stressed he is unlikely to take his place in the Group Two contest.

Hills added: "We are just taking our time with him. It is good that the owner is patient as he just needs a bit more time. Just little things have not gone his way and it has been a really cold spring in our valley.

"I don't think he will be going to the Dante. We will just have a look at things. There are no real firm plans with him."
