Copper Knight slays Chester rivals for Hugo Palmer

Man-of-the-moment Hugo Palmer began Chester's May meeting in the best possible fashion when Copper Knight ran out an impressive winner of the Stellar Group Lily Agnes Conditions Stakes.

Just a few days on from landing his first British Classic with Galileo Gold, Copper Knight was in just as much control, always travelling well for James Doyle.

Punters only wanted to know about Tom Dascombe's Fiery Character for a local winner but she was a spent force a furlong out.

Copper Knight hung to his left once hitting the front, but he was so far clear it did not matter.

Stoneyford Lane came home second, two lengths away from the 11-4 winner.

Doyle said: "It was a professional performance. We were drawn out a little bit but we had enough early speed to get behind Tom Dascombe's filly.

"She (Fiery Character) couldn't take me as far as I wanted and he pricked his ears once I got there.

"He showed a liking for going left last time but it didn't matter as much this time."
