David Griffiths is hoping Duke Of Firenze can recapture some of his old sparkle in the H G Buck One, Two, Sixer Handicap at Lingfield on Friday.

The seven-year-old joined Griffiths from Robert Cowell for 16,000 guineas after losing his way last season, but showed glimpses of his old self at Epsom recently.

The Bawtry handler is eyeing up a return to that venue next month for a shot at the Investec Dash, a race which Duke Of Firenze won when trained by Sir Michael Stoute back in 2013.

He said: "I probably shouldn't have run him at Doncaster first time out as the ground was bad, but he needed a run.

"We are still learning about him and when Oisin (Murphy) got off him after finishing third at Epsom last time, he said that the Dash would be the perfect race for him.

"He goes to Lingfield on Friday, then we might take the same route Sir Michael (Stoute) did and go to York then to Epsom.

"He was dropped 5lb from his first run so he might have to find a couple of pounds to get into the Dash. He works up with Take Cover and Robert Cowell said before we got him that he works like a Group horse. If we can get him back on track, he could be exciting."
