Hillbilly Boy gave Cheshire trainer Tom Dascombe back-to-back victories at Chester when making all the running in the Crabbie's Earl Grosvenor Handicap.

Newera handed Dascombe his first winner at the three-day meeting in the final race on Thursday and Hillbilly Boy (13-2) had no trouble following up as he galloped his rivals into the ground.

Richard Kingscote always had the situation in control and his mount kept on strongly to beat the favourite Gabrial's Kaka by two and a half lengths. Arnold Lane was two and a quarter lengths away in third.

The victory was sweet for Dascombe as he had ridden a winner for Hillbilly Boy's owner Keith Macguire 22 years ago.

"I rode him a winner all those years ago and yet we only live a mile and a half apart and I'd been at Manor House Stable for six years before he asked me to train a horse for him!" said Dascombe.

"The winner I rode for him was Feels Like Gold, trained by Martin Pipe, in a Wetherby bumper, so I've ridden and trained a winner for him."

He added: "I didn't think the ground was going to be soft enough for him, but it's obviously proper, decent ground, and anything can act on it. Richard gave him a peach of a ride. They are Chester owners, so this was the plan."
