Mount Nelson to Boardsmill Stud

Dual Group 1 winner and proven stakes sire Mount Nelson has been acquired by William and John Flood’s Boardsmill Stud in County Meath. In a deal brokered by Barry Lynch of Kern Lillingston Bloodstock, the 12 year old, who previously stood at Newsells Park Stud, will take up duties as a dual purpose sire in 2017.

Mount Nelson has established an excellent record to date with his progeny on the racecourse. He has sired 32 Group & Stakes performers to date over all distances from his first 4 crops, including 14 Group/stakes performers this year alone. His highest rated performer this year is Librisa Breeze who was beaten just over 3 lengths in the Group 1 British Champions Sprint Stakes at Ascot recently and is an exciting Group 1 prospect for 2017. His first runners over jumps have also been catching the eye including the Willie Mullins trained Penhill, winner of 4 of his 5 starts over hurdles including a Grade 3 novice hurdle earlier this month and Allee Bleue, a 3 time novice hurdle winner with Phillip Hobbs.

John Flood said: ‘We had been following Mount Nelson’s progress at stud for quite a while and when I went to see him I was hugely impressed. He is a real good looking imposing individual with great presence and is the most fantastic walker. His strike rate with his flat runners and his Stakes winners/runners statistics are up there with some of the leading Flat Sires. His progeny are tough and improve with age, so it is no surprise to see plenty of them making their way into the big National Hunt trainer’s yards.

"It is also very encouraging that there seems to be no bias between his colts and his fillies with over half of his stakes performers being fillies.”

Julian Dollar, general manager at Newsells said: “Although we are sad to say goodbye to Mount Nelson, we are delighted that he is going to Boardsmill Stud where he will get every opportunity to cover a strong book of mares.

"Mount Nelson has been a good servant to Newsells Park, producing 32 Group and Stakes performers to date, including 7 Group or Stakes winners this year alone. He has proven himself a producer of top-class juveniles like Royal Ascot winner Berkshire and Purr Along, sprinters like Ninjago and Librisa Breeze, and Classic and Group 1 performers like dual Oaks placed Volume.

"He can produce the most magnificent looking, athletic horses and I have no doubt he will receive great support with William and John Flood at Boardsmill.”

A fee will be announced at a future date.
