With 175 yearlings going through the ring, the second day of the October Yearling Sale was devoted to Part II of the catalogue. A total of 133 lots changed hands, resulting in a 76% clearance rate, for an average of €41,489, generating a turnover of €5,518,000.

Top price for son of Showcasing
Very active during the first day of the sale when he bought three yearlings for €590,000, Anthony Stroud once again made his presence felt on Day Two. By telephone with Freddy Powell, the agent had the final say for a son of Showcasing (lot 203) for €300,000, the top lot of the day. Offered from Haras de Castillon, the colt is a half-brother to ZIYARID, the Prix Daphnis (Gr.3) winner, that also finished runner-up in the Secretariat Stakes (Gr.1).

“He’s a very athletic colt that is well balanced,” said the agent by telephone. “I’ve bought him for Godolphin. He’ll stay in France and be trained by Andre Fabre.”

Haras de Victot continues to invest
In company with Alban de Mieulle, Sheikh Abdullah Al Thani bought five yearlings during the second day, led by a daughter of Territories (lot 277). Offered by J.K. Thoroughbreds and with a last-minute update following her half-brother CELTIC ART’s runner-up spot in the Prix Isonomy (L.) this afternoon, the filly was sold for €260,000.

“She’s a lovely racy filly with several things in her favour for the future,” explained de Mieulle. “Sheikh Abdullah really wanted her. She’s by a very good stallion. The Sheikh will start taking full ownership of the stud next year, which explains why he is starting to invest in the future.”

A little earlier, he had picked up a daughter of Zoffany (lot 255) from the maternal line of SPECIFICITY, that has produced Group 1 winners PRIDE and SPECIOSA. Consigned by Anna Sundstrom (Coulonces Sales), she was knocked down for €130,000.

“She corresponds exactly to the kind of fillies that we are looking for,” said de Mieulle. “She has an excellent pedigree and is well made. She’ll be broken and then we’ll see where she goes into training after that.”

Wootton Bassett colt for Japanese owner
Offered from Haras des Sablonnets, it was the turn of a son of Wootton Bassett (lot 204) to be subject to a bidding war in which Sebastien Desmontils (Chauvigny Global Equine) came out the winner. Hailing from the well-known Wertheimer family of LEGERETE, the colt was bought for €200.000.

“I’ve bought him for a new Japanese client, for whom I also bought a son of Frankel yesterday,” said Desmontils. “Wootton Bassett is a super stallion – he’s a lovely colt from a very good family. He’ll go into training in France.”

Niels Petersen looking for his next Derby winner
A regular at the ARQANA October Yearling Sale, where he notably bought triple Group winner SQUARE DE LUYNES, a recent winner of the Stockholm Cup International (Gr.3) last month, Norwegian trainer Niels Petersen bought a son of Sea The Moon (lot 236) for €130,000. The Haras de Grandcamp consigned colt is a grandson of Group winner CHIMING.

“He’s a colt that I really like,” commented Petersen. “I’ve been coming here for the last five years and I love it! We’ve found here the last three Norwegian Derby winners, and I hope this can be the next one!”

Daughter of Wootton Bassett for Hubert Guy
Lot 190, a daughter of Wootton Bassett from Haras d’Etreham was knocked down to Hubert
Guy for €135,000. A half-sister to Listed winner MADEMOISELLE MARIE, the filly also hails from the family of Group 1 WHITE HEART, TEMPERA and RAINBOW CONNECTION.

After signing the docket, the agent commented, “She’s a very nice filly by a very good stallion and the dam has already produced a Listed winner. I’ve bought her for a syndicate and she’ll stay in France most likely to be trained by Fabrice Chappet.”

Alex Cole buys Shalaa son
Out of dual Group winner NOELANI, already the dam of black-type winner SUFRANEL, a son of Shalaa (lot 324) from Ecurie des Monceaux was knocked down for €130,000 to Alex Cole. The colt is also a close relative to champion sprinter NAMID.

Soldier Hollow colt for Pascal Bary
The gavel fell at €110,000 in favour of Pascal Bary on behalf of Alaric de Murga, standing beside him, for a bay colt by Soldier Hollow (lot 294) from Fairway Consignment.

After signing the docket, de Murga said: “He’s a very well-made colt,” before joking, “I’ll tell you more when he wins a big race.”

Son of Camelot for Australia
Australian Matt Becker had to wait until the end of the second day to make his first purchase in Deauville, when swooping for a son of Camelot (lot 334) for €110,000. The colt was consigned by La Motteraye Consigment.

He said,”I’ve bought him for Group 1 Bloodstock, an Australlian syndicate based in Melbourne. It’s my first purchase at ARQANA! We really like his sire, Camelot. He’ll go to Australia, and hopefully he can run in the “Cup” races.”
