€62,000 colt tops Goffs Sportsman's Part 2
Top spot at the Sportsman’s Sale Part 2, the concluding day of yearling sales at Goffs this week, went to a son of Beat Hollow from Rossenarra Stud (Lot 979) that sold for €62,000. The half-brother to two Stakes winners in Accepted and Asidious Alexander was purchased by Salcey Forest Stud.
BBA Ireland once again dominated the leading buyer ranks today with the purchase of a further 19 yearlings, headed by a Mount Nelson filly from the family of Almanzor (Lot 831) from Clonmult Stables for €31,000 as well as a daughter of Red Jazz (Lot 888) from Rockview Stables for €30,000.
At the conclusion of the Sportsman’s Sale, Goffs Chief Executive Henry Beeby said:
“Following the extraordinary success of the Orby Sale it was always going to be hard for the Sportsman’s Sale to keep up especially given the prevailing market conditions.
“Those lots that stood out on paper and in the flesh remained hard to buy pointing to a strong trade best summarized by an impressive 81% clearance rate for the expanded Sportsman’s Sale Part 1 yesterday. However it would be wrong not to acknowledge the tightening of the market with the average and the median dropping back to 2014 levels.
“Today’s Part 2 returned figures in line with market expectations which should not avoid the harsh realities that we flagged last autumn as clearance rates at the middle to lower end have dropped which would appear to be a direct consequence of foal crops that are rising again. That presents breeders and sales companies with challenges as we exist to create a market place for those who choose our sales but cannot necessarily source the numbers of buyers required to service a growing foal crop.
“As ever the combined efforts of Goffs and Irish Thoroughbred Marketing attracted an eclectic bunch of buyers to the Sportsman’s Sale but none more so that the BBA Ireland’s Chinese clients who have dominated the market with over 60 purchases over the two days. Their involvement has been a huge positive and a great example of ITM assisting Goffs in our mission to seek out new buyers for each sale.
“The Orby Sale clearly demonstrated the global appeal of what is one of Europe’s premier yearling sales with the most international audience we have welcomed including several new top of the market buyers battling it out with our regular clients for some outstanding yearlings. Tuesday and Wednesday showed us there is undoubtedly a hunger for the best and we continue to attract a bigger share of the top Irish yearlings and some serious contenders from further afield. That is obviously gratifying but the worrying signals in the latter part of 2015 are becoming a trend which will clearly require us to review our Sportsman’s format in the coming weeks and months.
