Great Britain
The Weatherbys International Team administers the import and export of all Thoroughbreds in and out of Great Britain.
The transfer of information between Stud Book Authorities is vital for the purpose of integrity. Before a horse can race or breed in Great Britain, or in another country, the correct documentation needs to have been completed and lodged.
Any horse permanently imported into Great Britain must have an Export Certificate filed with Weatherbys within 90 days of their arrival, in order to be eligible to race or breed in Great Britain. Further requirements for an imported horse to race in Great Britain are available on the British Horseracing Authority’s rules website here.
When a horse is being permanently imported into Great Britain, your shipper will need to apply to the country of export for the official Export Certificate to be lodged with Weatherbys.
Similarly, where a horse is to be permanently exported from Great Britain, the shipper will need to apply for the Export Certificate to be sent from Weatherbys to the country of destination. If travelling from Great Britain by sea, an Animal Health Act Certificate may also be required.
The administrative requirements for importing or exporting a horse are described in this document.
