Richard Harper throws Gray Wolf River in at the deep end in Christmas Hurdle

Massive outsider Gray Wolf River is set to take her chance in the 32Red.com Christmas Hurdle at Kempton on Boxing Day.

The 63-rated hurdler is available at odds as big as 5,000-1, with trainer Richard Harper even of the belief it is "a bit crazy" to run.

But after having made sure he is not in breach of any British Horseracing Authority rules, the Oxfordshire handler, who also owns the five-year-old mare, is happy for her to line up in a race that has attracted just six entries.

To that end, Gray Wolf River would earn connections at least £1,340 if she completes the race.

Harper told the Times: "I'm a little trainer, and my horses are not good enough to be in that race, but the laws are that she can run.

"I think that's a bit crazy, but there you go."

Harper did a similar thing with Chapel House, who finished last of six behind My Tent Or Yours in the Christmas Hurdle three years ago.

The trainer said: "We stayed with him for a mile or so but then they changed gears.

"We had a lovely day out. The key thing is getting the right jockey, who knows how to get round."

Gray Wolf River was last seen finishing a distant ninth in a small race at Plumpton on December 12 and has yet to win in 11 starts over hurdles.
